What's new for ProSeries/Ohio
The following items are new for tax year 2021:
- Ohio Income Tax Tables.
Beginning with tax year 2021, individuals with Ohio taxable nonbusiness income of $25,000 or less are not subject to Ohio income tax. Additionally, Ohio taxable nonbusiness income in excess of $110,650 is taxed at 3.99%. All other rates were reduced by 3%.
- Modified Adjusted Gross Income.
Your exemption amount, certain credits, and the school district income tax bases are determined using "modified adjusted gross income" or "modified adjusted gross income less exemptions".
- Personal Exemption.
The personal exemption remains the same as last year. Tapayers earning less than $40,000 a year at $2,400,those earning more than $80,000 a year at $1,900, and for those with incomes between $40,000 and $80,000 a year at $2,150.
- Education Credits.
Three new nonrefundable credits are available beginning in tax year 2021. Certain individuals who (i) paid for home school expenses, (ii) donated to a scholarship granting organization, or (iii) paid tuition to a nonchartered, nonpublic school may be eligible for these credits.
- Schedules of Withholding.
Paper filers must complete the Ohio Schedule of Withholding (and Schedule of School District Withholding) listing each income statement reporting Ohio (or school district) tax withheld.
- Electronic 1099-G.
1099-G is available to view and print using Online Services at tax.ohio.gov/File
- Ohio Nonresident Statement.
Nonresident taxpayers who are eligible to file form IT NRS may now make their statement using the IT 1040 in place of filing the IT NRS.
- Ohio's Earned Income Credit.
Ohio’s Earned Income Credit (EIC) equals to 30% of the federally claimed EIC.
- Business Income Deduction.
Those taxpayers claiming the Business Income Deduction (BID) will be required to 'add-back' the BID when calculating both school district income tax (if applicable), and eligibility for certain means-tested credits.
- Ohio Schedules Renamed.
The Department has renamed Ohio Schedule A to the "Ohio Schedule of Adjustments" and Ohio Schedule J to the "Ohio Schedule of Dependents". This was done to standardize the names with other schedules and to better describe the purpose of each schedule.

Additional information
Check all returns after printing
The Ohio Department of Taxation scans computer-generated forms to quickly
process the income tax returns it receives. To meet the requirements for
producing computer-generated forms, ProSeries is required to limit the width of
the tax information printed on forms that are scanned. In certain cases, data
you entered may be truncated. After completing a tax return, review the
information that prints (for example, mailing address information), make any
necessary changes, and reprint the return before mailing it.
